How it works

The Internet Archive has kept copies of millions of sites since 1996. We show the first capture of each year with links to view them. Before buying a previously used domain, check that it didn't host spam, adult content or copies of other brands: that can hurt its reputation with search engines and email filters.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Enter the domain.
  2. We look up its snapshots in the Internet Archive (Wayback Machine) and its registration data.
  3. You'll see when it first appeared online, which years it was active, and links to the snapshots.
  4. Use it to value the domain or find out what was published there before.

What it's useful for

  • Check whether a domain you're buying was used for spam or shady content.
  • Learn a domain's real age to value it.
  • See what a site that no longer exists looked like.

FAQ

Why are there no captures?

The domain may never have been used, the site may have blocked the archive with robots.txt, or the owner may have asked to be excluded.

Does history affect a domain's SEO?

It can. A domain with a history of spam or penalties may take time to earn trust. A clean history, or a legitimate site on the same topic, is an advantage.

Why does history matter before buying?

A domain once used for spam or scams may be penalized by search engines or blocklisted by mail servers, which hurts your new project.

Does the Internet Archive save every site?

Not every site, not every day. It keeps many snapshots of well-linked sites; an obscure domain may have few or none.

What if there are no snapshots?

It probably never had a public website, or the owner asked not to be archived.

Does domain age help rankings?

Not on its own, but a domain with a clean history and quality links usually starts with more trust than a brand-new one.

Can I see the full old content?

Yes, the links open saved snapshots as they looked at the time, though some images may be missing.
