How it works

Internationalized domain names (IDN) allow characters like ñ, é or ü, but DNS only understands ASCII letters. So each label is encoded in Punycode with the xn-- prefix. You'll need that form when setting up DNS records, IIS bindings or certificates.

FAQ

Should I register a domain with accents?

It can work as an extra domain that redirects to your main one, but many people will type the version without accents and some email software still handles IDNs poorly.

Why does my browser show the domain as xn--?

Browsers show the Punycode form when a name mixes scripts or looks like another domain, as protection against impersonation.
